Dr. Preethi L. Chandran Received the 2024 United States President’s Lifetime Achievement Award
It is with great honor and admiration that we announce that Dr. Preethi L. Chandran, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Howard University, received the 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the 43rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Breakfast in Annapolis, Maryland.
The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award is one of the nation’s most distinguished civil honors, presented by the sitting President of the United States. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to volunteer service, leaving a lasting impact on communities and lives.
Established in 2003 by President George W. Bush through The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, this award aims to foster the “Spirit of Service and Civic Engagement” by recognizing volunteers nationwide who dedicate their time to helping others and improving communities across America.
Dr. Chandran is a shining example of this spirit, with many years of tireless service, exemplary leadership, and dedication to public education, mentoring, and research. Her work has empowered underserved communities and inspired numerous students. From organizing summer STEM workshops to mentoring underrepresented students who have risen to prestigious academic and professional positions, Dr. Chandran’s impact is profound and far-reaching.
Her contributions embody Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, reflecting a steadfast commitment to equity, opportunity, and transformative change. As a researcher, Dr. Chandran has made groundbreaking contributions to the field of biophysical sciences, supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and private industry. These achievements underscore her commitment to innovation and addressing real-world challenges.
